Genesis 12:5
And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, with all the substance they had gathered and the souls they had gotten in Haran, and went forth to go into the land of Canaan, and into the land of Canaan they came. His departure from his former and native country and homeland was in obedience to God's call. The souls taken with him were people who had joined them in Haran, including many who through Abraham and Sarah had come to worship and serve the true God and who chose to travel with him rather than remain there.
His arrival completed the journey from Haran and sets the scene for his first encampment at Shechem, in a fertile land already occupied by the Canaanites and marked by idolatry. The Canaan he entered had been promised as an everlasting possession, yet he did not receive an earthly possession there. Leaving meant abandoning his ancestral home and the graves of his fathers to live as a stranger in the land God had promised.
Traveling as a stranger with his household and those accompanying him, his first work wherever he pitched his tent was to build an altar to God and worship with his fellow travelers.
