The fourteenth year marks Chedorlaomer's return to Canaan with allied kings, fourteen years after his invasion had made the country tributary. After several princes revolted, the kings came to force them back under Elamite rule, smiting the peoples of the region, defeating the local kings and plundering the cities. This campaign was part of the conflict from which Abraham later rescued captives. Abraham's victory over greatly superior forces showed the people of Sodom that divine power had made him conqueror.
