Genesis 14:9

With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.

The verse names the two sides in the conflict, four invading kings on one side against five defending kings on the other, with Chedorlaomer king of Elam standing at the head of the invaders with his allied kings. Fourteen years earlier he had invaded Canaan and made it tributary to himself, and now he was marching into Canaan again with his allies to reduce the revolting princes to submission. The five kings of Canaan joined their forces and met the invaders in the vale of Siddim, but they were completely overthrown, with a large part of their army cut to pieces and those who escaped fleeing for safety to the mountains. Having won the field, the victors plundered the cities of the plain and then departed with rich spoil and many captives, among whom were Lot and his family. This defeat and captivity set the scene for Abraham's later rescue of the captives, when his victory over greatly superior forces showed the people of Sodom that divine power had made him conqueror.
