Genesis 15:7

And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

In this declaration the Lord names Himself as the One who led Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldees for the express purpose of giving him this land to inherit. The gift was not for immediate possession by Abraham himself. His descendants would first pass through a period of suffering and affliction before they would be established in Canaan.

The covenant ceremony that followed confirmed that God would bestow the land upon Abraham's descendants. Its appointed bounds were declared to extend from the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates. Yet the promise looks beyond that earthly settlement to its fullest fulfillment, when the earth is renewed to the beauty of Eden and given to Abraham as an everlasting possession.
