The Angel Finds Hagar by the Springby emmanuel_higgins

Genesis 16:12

And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

The verse was spoken by the Lord to Hagar when she was in the desert, promising that Ishmael's descendants would become exceedingly numerous. His name, meaning God shall hear, was given to keep God's mercy toward Hagar in remembrance. It portrays Ishmael as living a wild, marauding life as a desert chief in mutual hostility with other people, his hand against them and theirs against him. Ishmael himself later repented and returned to his father's God, yet the character formed in him persisted in his descendants. Those descendants became a powerful, turbulent, heathen nation that troubled and afflicted the descendants of Isaac. The same picture of mutual opposition illustrates the spirit of those who cling to fretfulness and querulous complaints, which damages both their own lives and the lives of others.
