Genesis 19:33
And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
That night the daughters caused their father to drink wine, and the firstborn went in and lay with him while he perceived neither when she lay down nor when she arose. This happened after leaving Sodom, after a short stay in Zoar where iniquity prevailed as in Sodom and fear of destruction drove Lot from remaining there, and after Zoar was consumed when he went to the mountains to dwell in a cave, stripped of all for which he had exposed his family to the influences of a wicked city. In the destruction of Sodom only a few survived though warning had been given, Lot saving only himself and his two daughters. The verse belongs to the account of Sodom and Gomorrah as a picture of a wicked and corrupt place, displaying its moral corruption and corrupt practices and linking its destruction with the corrupt practices found in Canaan.
The daughters' sinful conduct was the result of long wicked association in living in Sodom, whose moral corruption perverted their morals and became so interwoven with character that their sense of right and wrong was confused, they could not distinguish good from evil, and sin did not appear as sin to them. Thus the curse of Sodom followed Lot even to the cave. From that act came Lot's only posterity, the Moabites and Ammonites, vile idolatrous tribes, rebels against God and bitter enemies of His people.
As part of the faithful record of Lot's sin, the account shows that even men favored by God and entrusted with great responsibilities, even those who served God, can be overcome by temptation, struggle and fall. It is preserved as a warning, instruction and lesson for later generations to avoid evil and not as an excuse for wrongdoing, showing that God's people through His grace can rise, recover, gain victory and continue the struggle, which encourages others to resist temptation. Standing in Genesis 18-19, the verse calls readers to seek the Lord earnestly and to take a decided stand in obedience to all of God's requirements rather than merely professing belief in the truth. Because exposure to depraved conduct can stain the soul, young people should be guarded in what they see and hear and kept away from corrupt places and associations. Large cities such as Melbourne are becoming as Sodom and Gomorrah as the world grows worse and worse, and this likeness is a sign of the times to be discerned that warns against making large plants and establishing business interests in the cities.
