Genesis 19:36

Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father after they left Sodom. This happened after Lot left Zoar and lived stripped of all he had in a cave in the mountains, while Zoar itself was soon destroyed as God purposed. Lot was able to save only himself and these two daughters. Their incestuous act resulted from the corrupting influence of long life among the Sodomites, whose moral corruption became interwoven with their character, confused their sense of right and wrong, and made sin no longer appear sinful to them. In this way the curse of Sodom followed Lot even into his mountain refuge. Lot's only posterity from this act was the Moabites and Ammonites, vile idolatrous tribes, rebels against God and bitter enemies of His people.

The verse belongs to the account of Sodom, whose practices were depraved and stain the soul. Sodom was destroyed for the same crime that existed in Canaan, and Lot's family provides another example of the corruption associated with Sodom. The same wicked condition of Sodom and Gomorrah is now growing worse and worse in the cities, so that places like Melbourne are becoming as Sodom and Gomorrah, and this likeness is one of the signs of the times.

The verse is included among the records showing that people favored by God can be overcome by temptation and commit sin. Such faults of believers are faithfully preserved as warnings for later generations, to teach them the consequences of sin and to encourage them to keep struggling against sin and avoid the same evils, not to excuse wrongdoing. Their case warns all who wish to live godly lives to separate themselves from all influences calculated to lead them away from God, and youth especially are to be guarded and kept as far from Sodom as possible. This likeness to Sodom warns against moving into the cities and establishing large plants and business interests there.
