Genesis 2:19
And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
Out of the ground God formed every beast of the field and every fowl of the air and brought them to Adam in Eden to see what he would call them. Adam gave each living creature its name from his knowledge of its nature and habits, by direct instruction from the Creator, showing an intellectual power but little less than angels. He did this work while innocent in holy innocence, enjoying communion with God and sinless angels amid the perfect happiness of the Garden. This same creation setting founded marriage, for by giving Adam one wife at the beginning God showed His order that marriage is one man with one wife, designed by Heaven to bless humanity and guard its purity and happiness. It was in that Eden home that Adam and Eve transgressed and fell into the hands of Satan, yet Christ paid the price to ransom humanity so that by perfect obedience humanity is brought back to that Eden home to see its beauty again.
Eden Creation and Naming
Out of the ground God formed every beast of the field and every fowl of the air and brought them to Adam in Eden to see what he would call them. That Eden forming and bringing belongs with the founding of the family, so that Eden stands as the model for family life. Adam named each living creature, and the names came from his knowledge of their nature and habits and showed his familiarity with the created world.
The naming came by direct instruction from the Creator and proves intellectual power but little less than angels. Adam was acquainted with every living creature from the mighty leviathan among the waters to the insect mote in the sunbeam, was acquainted with the nature and habits of all, and gave each its name from that knowledge. This was part of learning the laws and operations of nature. He did this work while innocent in holy innocence, enjoying communion with God and sinless angels. His naming work also extended to the flowers and trees of Eden.
He lived among the beasts and birds in the Garden of Eden in perfect happiness without worry. The Garden was an emblem of heaven and of the love of God, with beautiful fragrant flowers and fruit trees bearing precious treasures for the good of man. Birds caroled songs of praise to God from every tree, which Adam in untainted purity delighted to hear.
Marriage and Human Order
The creation setting in which the beasts and birds were formed and brought to Adam founded the marriage institution, celebrated by God Himself, whose originator is the Creator of the universe, designed by Heaven to bless humanity, honorable, and one of the first gifts of God to man. By giving Adam one wife at the beginning, God showed His order and law for all who should live upon the earth, that marriage is one man with one wife. A plurality of wives is contrary to that wise original arrangement and changes God's order, for polygamy was introduced early after the fall when men followed their own carnal and sinful desires, and the more men multiplied wives to themselves the more sin, wretchedness, wickedness, and unhappiness increased. When divine principles are recognized and obeyed, marriage is a blessing that guards the purity and happiness of the race, provides for man's social needs, and elevates the physical, intellectual, and moral nature, and it is one of the two institutions Adam brought with him beyond the gates of Paradise after the fall.
Marriage as instituted when God gave Eve to Adam is lawful and not sinful in itself but the fulfillment of duty, with all God's laws marvelously adapted to meet the nature of man, while the sin is in perverting what in itself is lawful and corrupting God's gifts by using them to minister to selfish desires. The creation of the race male and female rests on a division of labor in which each sex is not the other but the necessary complement of the other, and it takes both to complete either, with no common arena of all businesses, pursuits, and professions for both. There is unlikeness in faculties, capacities, duties, adaptations for duty, bodily form from crown to sole with every vital organ by form, locality, or function revealing its sex, and in aesthetical, mental, and spiritual endowments of mind and heart, and this universal and unmistakable distinction must be kept, including in costume as a guard and perpetual restraining monitor to protect the virtue of both sexes and to keep society at large from becoming corrupt. Eden with its family order stands as a model for family life, alongside the forming of the living creatures and their bringing to Adam.
God formed the animals from the ground and brought them to Adam to see what he would name them, expressing Adam's role in the original creation and God's provision for him. God had also given Eve to Adam as his companion and had provided for him. Adam's love for her was so strong that after she disobeyed he chose to share her fate rather than be separated from her.
Fall, Redemption and Application
The Eden home formed in Genesis 2 is the place where Adam and Eve transgressed God's law and fell into the hands of Satan, and Christ paid the price to ransom humanity from Satan so that by perfect obedience to all of God's requirements, overcoming as Christ overcame by keeping His Father's commandments, humanity is brought back to that Eden home. When Adam is restored to Eden, he sees again the beauty of the garden he once knew. Adam stood in that Eden in innocence with unfallen human nature, and for the Son of God to take even that innocent nature would have been an almost infinite humiliation.
Instead Jesus accepted humanity as weakened and defiled by four thousand years of sin, accepting like every child of Adam the results of heredity, to share human sorrows and temptations and to give the example of a sinless life. Adam had been placed among the beasts of the field and birds of the air in the Garden of Eden in a state of perfect happiness, without worry. The Garden was an emblem of heaven and of the love of God, with beautiful fragrant flowers, fruit trees bearing precious treasures for the good of man, and birds caroling songs of praise to God from every tree, which Adam in untainted purity delighted to hear.
Those sights and sounds are what God still wants men and women to rejoice in today, reposing joyfully in His goodness, mercy, and love and filled with the peace of heaven, rather than being crowded into cities in terraces and tenements. Crowded city life with its care and anguish that rends hearts is not in His order but comes from sin marring His purpose. His purpose is that the image of God be impressed anew upon souls, that sinners be converted, and that His people delight again in the sights and sounds He made.
