Abraham Buys the Cave of Machpelah from Ephronby KandD

Genesis 23:19

And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.

After this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. That Hebron was the burial place of the patriarchs and afterward became David's chief city in Judah. Although the whole of Canaan had been promised to him, he owned none of it when Sarah died, not so much as a piece of land to put his dead in, and had to buy ground to bury her. The cave he purchased from the Canaanites for a burial place was his only possession in the promised land.

The burial therefore shows that he lived in the promised land as a pilgrim and stranger, without present prosperity or possession. He was satisfied to remain landless because the view of immortal life on this earth purified as his home had been opened before him, and he looked for a city whose builder and maker is God. Believers likewise are only pilgrims and strangers seeking that city, and should not expect all their reward here in possessions, land, gold, or silver, but should expect an eternal weight of glory.
