Abraham Buys the Cave of Machpelah from EphronBible World

Genesis 23:4

I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

Abraham dwelt in Canaan as a pilgrim and a stranger, for although God had promised him the land he owned none of it. When Sarah died he had to buy a burial place for her, and that purchase itself showed that he lived there without earthly possession. His lack of land did not undo the promise, for he looked instead to the future home that God would give. He was content to wait for its fulfillment rather than claim fulfillment then.

To bury the dead out of sight is to remove them from view while holding to the comfort of their return through the resurrection. That hope comforts those who mourn, for the dead shall come again from the land of the enemy. The reunion then secured will be eternal.
