Genesis 23:6
Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead. Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.
The Hittites addressed Abraham as a mighty prince, showing that he was regarded by the people around him as a man of rank who commanded their respect. Yet although he was thus honored among the people of Canaan, he owned no land there. When Sarah died he had to purchase a burial place for her, having no sepulchre of his own in which to lay her.
His lack of any earthly possession in the land did not cancel God's promise that it would be his. Nor did it remove his hope of a future home in the renewed earth. He lived there as a pilgrim, looking toward the city that God would build.
