Genesis 24:41

Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath.

The oath did not bind the servant without exception, for he was to be clear from it when he came to Abraham's kindred and they would not give him a wife, and in that case he was not bound to fulfill the mission. This provision belongs to the account of Abraham's arrangements to obtain a wife for Isaac.

In that account Abraham's training of Isaac is seen in Isaac's acceptance of his father's guidance and deference to his father's judgment. Isaac is held up as a God-fearing son who trusted his father's experienced, God-fearing servant to choose a wife for him and believed that God would direct the matter, with the servant carrying out Abraham's choice. The lesson for parents is that they should teach their children obedience and guide their affections toward suitable companions for marriage.

The lesson for children who fear God is that the choice of a spouse should be approached in the fear of God and made a subject of prayer.
