Genesis 24:44

And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master’s son.

The prayer offered at the well made willingness to give drink to a stranger and also to draw water for his camels the appointed sign of the woman the Lord had chosen to be the wife of the master's son. That test was meant to reveal a kindly, generous character fit for Isaac's future wife. It was prayed by Abraham's experienced, God-fearing servant as he sought God's direction in choosing a wife for Isaac. When Rebekah fulfilled the sign he recognized her as the woman the Lord had appointed.

Isaac trusted that God would direct him in obtaining a wife and submitted to his father's judgment by letting the experienced servant choose for him rather than choosing independently. That deference reflected his training in loving obedience. His marriage to Rebekah became a tender, happy union. His course stands as an example for children who profess to fear God.

Those contemplating marriage are therefore to seek God's guidance together with the counsel of wise, experienced parents. Parents are to guide their children's affections toward suitable companions. That guidance is to be exercised as loving authority that is not arbitrary, sustained by godly example.
