Genesis 24:55

And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.

Rebekah's mother and brother asked that she remain with them a little longer — at least ten days — before leaving to marry Isaac. This request belongs to the larger account of Abraham's household arranging and carefully guiding Isaac's marriage. In that account Isaac submitted to his father's judgment, letting his experienced, God-fearing servant choose his wife and trusting God to direct the choice. His marriage stands as a tender example of domestic happiness.

Abraham's guidance is a model for parents to direct their children's affections toward suitable companions for marriage. It also teaches parents to train their children to respect parental authority. For young people, the account teaches the need to seek parental counsel and divine guidance when choosing a marriage partner. For children who profess to fear God, marriage should be decided with prayer and respect for parental guidance rather than on the assumption that young people are competent to decide alone.
