Isaac Blesses Jacob Before He Departsby KalebRosendahl

Genesis 28:5

And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padan-aram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

Jacob's departure to Padan-aram was flight for his life as a fugitive from Esau's wrath after obtaining the blessing by deception. Yet he did not leave empty-handed, for he carried his father's blessing with him, Isaac having renewed to him the covenant promise and charged him as its inheritor to seek a wife from his mother's family in Mesopotamia. He set out alone with only his staff in his hand on a lonely journey of hundreds of miles through a country inhabited by wild, roving tribes, in timidity seeking to avoid men lest his angry brother trace him.

He set out with a deeply troubled heart in remorse, fearing he had lost forever the blessing God had purposed to give him, while Satan was at hand to press temptations upon him. That separation was caused by Rebekah's wrong counsel in persuading Jacob to deceive Isaac, so that she never saw Jacob's face again for the rest of her life. She repented of that counsel in bitterness. Isaac lived many years after giving Jacob the blessing. He became convinced by the course and manner of life of Esau and Jacob that the blessing rightly belonged to Jacob.
