Genesis 30:25

And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.

After Rachel bore Joseph, Jacob asked Laban to release him so that he could go to his own place and to his own country. He made the request because he had grown weary of serving Laban and desired to take his wives and children back to Canaan. Behind the exchange stood Laban's recognition that the Lord had blessed him on Jacob's account. Jealousy and hostility arising afterward in Laban's household made Jacob feel unsafe to remain where he was. Remembering the promise made at Bethel, Jacob sought guidance about returning, and God directed him to go back to the land of his fathers with the assurance that He would be with him.
