Genesis 30:4

And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.

Rachel gave her servant Bilhah to Jacob to be his wife because she was jealous of Leah. That arrangement was polygamous and therefore wrong. It blurred and disordered the proper family relationship. Instead of bringing relief, it deepened the misery of both Leah and Rachel. Laban understood both the jealous motive behind it and its unhappy outcome, so when he later bound Jacob not to mistreat his daughters and not to marry additional wives besides them, he aimed to protect their happiness and to prevent Jacob from heaping even greater misery on himself and on Leah and Rachel by taking still more wives.
