Genesis 31:10

And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.

At the time the flocks were breeding Jacob lifted his eyes in a dream and saw the males leaping upon the cattle, and those rams were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled with stripes, spots, and streaks. The marked character of the mating males identified the marked offspring that were to form Jacob's wages, and the dream belongs to his account of how his flocks grew.

The dream shows the Lord instructing Jacob by night visions in the course of his life. Because Jacob himself had thus been taught of God in dreams, he was led to believe that the Lord was likewise teaching his son Joseph through Joseph's dreams.
