And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.
The verse is Laban's rebuke to Jacob when he overtook him after Jacob had left secretly. Jacob had departed during Laban's absence, taking with him his family and all that he had. The departure was not known to Laban for three days, and when he learned of it he became very angry and pursued after Jacob determined to bring him back by force. God pitied Jacob, and just as Laban was about to overtake him He warned Laban in a dream to speak neither good nor bad to Jacob.
That warning meant Laban must neither force Jacob to return nor press him to return by flattering inducements. On meeting Jacob, Laban accused him of stealing away unawares and of carrying away his daughters as captives taken with the sword. At the same time Laban declared that it was in the power of his hand to do Jacob hurt, but that the God of Jacob's fathers had spoken to him the night before and restrained him. In this verse itself Laban complains that Jacob gave him no opportunity to kiss his sons and his daughters in a proper farewell, and he condemns Jacob's secret course as foolish and wrongful.
