Genesis 31:29

It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

Jacob departed while Laban was away, taking his family and all that he possessed, and word of it did not reach Laban until three days afterward. Laban became very angry and set out in pursuit, determined to bring Jacob back by force. By the time he was on the point of overtaking Jacob he both had the power to do him harm and intended to do so.

The Lord pitied Jacob and protected him by coming to Laban the night before in a dream to warn him and restrain him from carrying out his hostile purpose. The command to speak to Jacob neither good nor bad meant that Laban must neither force Jacob to return nor try to persuade him back with flattering inducements and offers.
