Genesis 31:4

And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,

Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah to come to him out in the field at his flock, drawing them apart for a private meeting as he prepared to act on God's direction to return to his homeland. He did so because he was distressed by Laban's changed countenance and hostile attitude toward him and knew not which way to turn, while the danger from Laban's sons had also made his position increasingly troubled. He had carried his case to God and interceded for direction, and the Lord mercifully answered by commanding him to return to the land of his fathers and to his kindred, with the promise that His presence would be with him. He called his wives apart to tell them that direction, to rehearse his wrongs and propose leaving Laban, and to relate the dream God had given him in which he was told to leave Laban and go to his kindred.
