Genesis 31:7

And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.

Jacob spoke these words to Rachel and Leah out in the field by his flock to explain why he must leave Laban. Laban was a crafty and envious kinsman whose turned face and hostility left Jacob distressed and in danger. In that distress Jacob prayed for direction. God answered by directing him to return to the land of his fathers and to his kindred with the promise to be with him. That same direction to leave Laban and go to his kindred was also given to him in a dream.

He had served Laban with all his power, yet Laban dealt deceitfully with him, tricking him and changing his wages ten times. Through all those unjust dealings God was with Jacob and restrained Laban so that he was not allowed to hurt him. Jacob himself recognized this restraint as God's protection. When Rachel and Leah heard him, they agreed he should do whatever God had told him. They said their father counted them as strangers, had sold them and used up their money, and that the riches God had taken from him belonged to them and their children.
