Genesis 33:18
And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram; and pitched his tent before the city. And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram; and pitched his tent before the city.
Jacob's coming to Shechem from Padan-aram was his safe return to the land of Canaan, fulfilling his prayer at Bethel to return to his own land in peace. He remained for a time in the vale of Shechem. There he bought a field of land and pitched his tent before the city. There he built an altar to God.
There he also dug a well. There he buried his household's idols beneath an oak. Shechem was already significant as the place where Abraham first built an altar to God in Canaan. By pitching his tents at Shechem, Jacob made the place part of the family history later recalled at Israel's covenant ceremony.
