Genesis 33:19

And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for an hundred pieces of money.

Jacob settled in Canaan by purchasing at Shechem the plot where he had spread his tent, buying it from Hamor's children for a hundred pieces of money. His arrival there in peace fulfilled the prayer he had made at Bethel. The spot recalled Abraham's earlier encampment and altar there. After the purchase he erected an altar and worshiped there together with his household.

Ownership of Shechem gave his sons a place to lead their flocks whenever they moved in search of better pasturage, and they later went there with their flocks. That ground lay near where they had dealt cruelly with the Shechemites, so when they remained there long without word he feared harm had overtaken them and sent Joseph there to find them and return with report of their condition. This same purchased field became the burial place of Joseph's body.
