Genesis 34:10
And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein. And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
Genesis 34:10 belongs to the tarry of Jacob and his sons at Shechem that ended in violence and bloodshed. The beginning that led to results so terrible was the act of Jacob's daughter, who went out to see the daughters of the land, thus venturing into association with the ungodly. He who seeks pleasure among those that fear not God places himself on Satan's ground and invites temptation. From that association came shame and sorrow to the one daughter of the household, guilt of murder to two brothers, and ruin and slaughter to a whole city in retaliation for the lawless deed of one rash youth.
Simeon and Levi dealt treacherously with the Shechemites, deceiving them and then cruelly destroying them. Their cruelty, though not unprovoked, was a grievous sin, carefully concealed from Jacob, and the tidings of their revenge filled him with horror and grief at their deceit and violence. Their fierce anger and cruel violence were condemned in Jacob's prophecy, in which they were told they would be divided and scattered in Israel.
