Genesis 34:24
And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city. And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
All the men of Shechem's city listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son, accepted their proposal, and every male submitted to circumcision. This agreement stands within the account of violence at Shechem, in which destruction and slaughter fell upon the city in retaliation for the lawless deed of one rash youth. Their compliance set the stage for what followed, when Simeon and Levi carried out a deceptive and cruel destruction of the Shechemites while they were thus disabled. Though the revenge of Simeon and Levi was provoked by that wrong, their treatment of the Shechemites remained a grievous sin.
