Genesis 34:28

They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,

After the slaughter of the city the sheep and oxen and asses of the Shechemites, with everything in the city and in the field, were carried away. The seizure was the work of Simeon and Levi, accomplished through deception as part of their cruel attack and destruction of the Shechemites. It inflicted ruin upon the whole city in retaliation for one young man's lawless deed, and the violence, cruelty, and revenge were grievous sins that God did not sanction.

Such conduct showed that Jacob's sons were not all righteous but were in some degree affected with idolatry. Jacob was ignorant of their purpose until the cruelty was accomplished, then reproved them for troubling him and making him despised among the inhabitants of the land. Their wrongdoing brought danger upon Jacob and his household, since the surrounding peoples in indignation might destroy them in response.

In distress over that danger Jacob called upon God, which led to God's command to go to Bethel, the putting away of strange gods, and the terror of God upon the surrounding cities so that they did not pursue Jacob's sons. The taking of the property was part of the cruelty for which the two brothers were later held responsible.
