Jacob Anoints the Pillar at Bethelby emmanuel_higgins

Genesis 35:11

And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;

God appeared to Jacob at Bethel to bless him and renew the covenant promise previously made to him. In that renewal He identified Himself as God Almighty. He commanded Jacob to be fruitful and multiply, promising that from him would come a nation and a company of nations, and that kings would come out of his loins.

The renewal was given because Jacob was humbled and feared God and had sought to remove wrong from his family, which God accepted. Before it, Jacob required his household to humble themselves and lay aside ornaments, to put away strange gods, to be clean and change garments, while he himself made atonement for their sins by sacrifice so that God would be entreated for them and would not leave them to be destroyed by the surrounding nations for the cruel, revengeful conduct of his sons toward the Shechemites. God protected the journeying family by putting His terror upon the cities round about, so that they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. In the place where God talked with him, Jacob set up a pillar of stone.
