Jacob Anoints the Pillar at Bethelby emmanuel_higgins

Genesis 35:12

And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.

God appeared to Jacob at Bethel and blessed him when the promise of the land was given. At Bethel He renewed to Jacob the covenant promise that the land He had given to Abraham and Isaac He would give to Jacob, and to his seed after him He would give the land.

The renewal came after Jacob had been humbled and had required his family to humble themselves, to lay aside ornaments, to put away strange gods and earrings, to be clean, and to change their garments. Jacob also offered sacrifice to make atonement for their sins, so that God would be entreated for them and would not leave them to be destroyed by the surrounding nations because of his sons' cruel revenge against the Shechemites. God accepted Jacob's efforts to remove the wrong from his family because Jacob's fear was before Him. Jacob responded by setting up a pillar of stone in the place where God talked with him.
