Genesis 35:18
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin. And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin.
Rachel died while giving birth to Benjamin. As she was dying she named her newborn son Benoni, meaning son of my sorrow. His father renamed the child Benjamin, meaning son of his right hand or his strength.
This is the only death in childbirth in the first twenty-four hundred years of human history. Even this death took place amid the fatigues of a patriarchal journey without modern comforts of travel. Its solitariness proves that mankind was created perfect in bodily organs and full of vital force, free from disease and unnatural death, and that giving birth did not naturally cause death.
