Genesis 35:6

So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Beth-el, he and all the people that were with him.

Jacob came with all the people who were with him to Luz in the land of Canaan, that is Bethel. Before the journey he commanded his household to put away their foreign gods and prepare to worship God at Bethel. That preparation meant humbling themselves and putting away their ornaments, while he would offer a sacrifice for their sins and seek God's protection.

They reached Bethel safely after leaving the Shechem area, for God caused fear to fall on the surrounding inhabitants so they did not try to avenge the slaughter. At Luz God appeared to Jacob, blessed him, and renewed His promise to him. Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God spoke with him.
