Genesis 36:10
These are the names of Esau’s sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau. These are the names of Esau’s sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.
Genesis 36:10 stands within a record given wholly to Esau and to the peoples descended from him. That record falls ten or eleven years after Jacob's rejoicing under God's blessing at Peniel, after his meeting with Esau and his peaceful coming to Shechem, after the destruction of Shechem, and after the revival in Jacob's household when idols were put away and God renewed His promises to Jacob. It follows also the death of Rachel and the birth of Benjamin, the sin of Reuben, the listing of the sons of Israel, and the death of Isaac at one hundred eighty years at the last meeting of Esau and Jacob. By that reckoning Jacob was about one hundred nine years old, Joseph was seventeen, and Benjamin was a little child of two to four years.
The verse names Eliphaz as the son of Esau by Adah, and Reuel as the son of Esau by Bashemath. Eliphaz in turn was the father of Teman, named in the verse that follows, whose name passed to a land famed for its wise men.
