Genesis 36:15

These were dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kenaz,

Genesis 36 as a whole is devoted to Esau and to the peoples descended from him. The list of chiefs to which this verse belongs stands well after the turning points of Jacob's middle life. It falls some ten or eleven years after his blessing at Peniel, after his meeting with Esau and his peaceful arrival at Shechem, and after the destruction of Shechem. It follows the revival in his household marked by the putting away of idols and the renewal of God's promises to him. It also follows the death of Rachel and the birth of Benjamin, the sin of Reuben, and the record of the sons of Israel.

It comes after the death of Isaac at one hundred eighty years of age, the occasion when Esau and Jacob met for the last time. By that reckoning Jacob was about one hundred nine years old when these Edomite chiefs are named. Joseph was seventeen, and Benjamin was still a small child of two to four years.
