Genesis 36:3

And Bashemath Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth.

Bashemath is Ishmael's daughter and the sister of Nebajoth, also spelled Nebaioth. She is the same woman called Mahalath in Genesis 28:9, so that Esau's Ishmaelite wife is known in Scripture by more than one name. This shows that Esau's wives could bear different names in different places in the record. The surrounding genealogy sets out Esau's family, in which Eliphaz, Esau's son, was born to a Hittite mother, and Amalek came from Eliphaz by his concubine Timna.

The verse stands in a chapter wholly taken up with Esau and the nations that sprang from him. Its setting is at a time when Jacob was about 109 years old, Joseph was 17, and Benjamin was a small child two to four years old. It belongs with the reading of Genesis 35-36 together with Psalm 16, to be read keeping ever in mind the Promised Seed and the channels through which that Seed should come.
