Genesis 36:5

This verse belongs to the account wholly taken up with Esau and the nations which sprang from him. That account comes about ten or eleven years after Jacob's blessing at Peniel, when Jacob was about 109, Joseph was 17, and Benjamin was a small child two to four years old. It follows Jacob's meeting with Esau and his coming in peace to Shechem, the destruction of Shechem, and the putting away of idols with the renewal of God's promises to Jacob. It follows also the death of Rachel and the birth of Benjamin, the sin of Reuben, and the death of Isaac at age 180, when Esau and Jacob probably met for the last time.
It belongs together with Genesis 35 and Psalm 16 for reading on Thursday January 16, keeping ever in mind the Promised Seed and the channels through which that Seed should come.
