Genesis 37:32
And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no. And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.
After selling Joseph, his brothers sent his bloodstained coat to Jacob to deceive him about what had happened to him. They claimed they had merely found it, concealing their own guilt, and asked Jacob to determine whether it was his son's coat. Jacob recognized the coat as his son's.
Its blood led him to conclude that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal, by wild beasts. This plunged him into intense, deep and lasting grief. He refused comfort and said he would mourn until he died. The verse belongs to the story of Joseph as a virtuous man of strong purpose who was maligned, persecuted and treated as a criminal despite doing what was right, which did not mean God had abandoned him, for God had victories in store for him.
