Joseph Standing in an Egyptian HallBible World

Genesis 39:4

And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

Joseph's faithful service won his master's confidence and favor, so he was set as overseer over the house with all that was owned put into his hand. His prosperity came through industry, care, energy, and persevering thoughtful effort crowned by God's blessing, not by a direct miracle apart from his work. As a stranger and slave in Egypt he stayed steadfast to his father's God amid vice, heathen worship, wealth and royal pomp, refusing to hide his faith or compromise with idolatry. By honoring God in both prosperity and adversity he was honored by God in return, and his captivity placed him by providence among a heathen nation to show the distinguishing character of true religion. Faithfulness and obedience in that lowly station trained every power for highest service, making him a tried pattern of integrity worthy of imitation.

Favor and Stewardship in Egypt

Joseph's faithful service won his master's confidence and favor, so he was made overseer over his house with all that he owned put into his hand. His faithful, careful and diligent work won regard and led to appointment over the household and its affairs, and his integrity made God's favor evident even to his idolatrous master. His early trustworthiness and service in that charge came before he was unjustly accused and imprisoned.

His prosperity came through industry, care, and energy crowned by God's blessing. The prosperity of his work was not a direct miracle apart from his work, but God's blessing crowned his persevering effort and thoughtful care. Potiphar trusted him with the care of everything he owned and placed the household under his charge, keeping personal responsibility only for his own food, since Egyptians considered it an abomination for a Hebrew to prepare food for them.

As a stranger and slave in Egypt, Joseph stayed steadfast to his father's God amid vice and heathen worship, surrounded by wealth, culture, and royal pomp. Remembering the lessons of his childhood on the journey from Canaan, he resolved to prove true and to act as a subject of the King of heaven. He remained pure and faithful to God amid idolatry without hiding his faith, and his integrity made God's grace visible in contrast with the surrounding corruption.

His trustworthiness rested on firm character and purity formed by early training and trust in God. His favor and authority rested on character formed under God's presence and guardianship, as he looked to the Lord as his friend and protector. The goodness seen in him came from God: his righteousness was Christ's, his spiritual life was nourished by God, and his conduct displayed Christ's compassion.

This favor came before and endured through unjust treatment, when he was maligned, persecuted, falsely accused, deprived of liberty, imprisoned, and treated as a criminal for doing right. Yet God gave him victories even while he appeared to suffer. God watched his conduct, and deals with each person according to their deeds. God did not forget Joseph while he lived among idolaters, which assures that Christ does not forsake those who are precious to him.

Faithful Witness and Example

Joseph was carried captive into Egypt by God's providence so that, placed among a heathen nation, he might display the distinguishing character of his religion and carry to others the blessings that come through knowing God. There he stood as a representative of Jehovah, never compromising with idolatry but bearing his faith and his name as a worshiper of the living God as a special honor. By remaining faithful without yielding his worship, he made God's blessings able to reach those around him.

His faithful service and responsibility honored God, and God honored him in return, for the Lord honors those who honor Him. That mutual honoring was shown in both prosperity and adversity, proving that honoring God in every condition brings honor from God. When God places a person amid the corruption of a heathen court, He gives grace to stand, not in human strength but in His strength.

In this he is the pattern for what every Seventh-day Adventist institution is to be to the world, serving faithfully in both prosperity and adversity. Faithfulness and obedience to duty in that lowly station as overseer trained every power for highest service. His path thus led from the most lowly to the most exalted place.

He stands as a tried and proved youth worthy of imitation by those forming characters to stand the test of judgment. Because he stood firm to principle he became a representative man and a pattern of integrity. His life teaches that each person is responsible for the character built in this probationary time and decides eternal destiny, with no second probation to come.

A person entrusted with sacred responsibilities can be one whom God can trust, teaching others by both precept and example. Joseph's faithful conduct as overseer made his principles visible, just as students can represent truth by the way they live.
