The Baker's Dream of Birds Eating BreadBible World

Genesis 40:17

And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.

This verse is part of the chief baker's dream as he told it to Joseph while Joseph was in prison, and he told it after Joseph had given the chief butler a favorable interpretation of his dream. The dream pictured baskets carried on the baker's head, with the uppermost basket holding baked food prepared for Pharaoh while birds were eating from that basket upon his head.

The three baskets represent three days, forming a predicted period of three days that applied to both the butler's and the baker's dreams. The birds eating the baked food out of the upper basket meant that birds would eat the baker's own flesh while he hung upon a tree. Joseph understood this terrible meaning and looked sad as he faced telling it, yet with a kind and sympathizing heart and a high sense of duty he gave the truthful and sad interpretation.

The interpretation meant that the chief baker would be put to death by the king's command by hanging. That outcome, including the baker's death, came true as foretold within the stated three days. This fulfillment shows that events limited by a given time were once only prophecy and afterward happened as foretold. It proves that the chronological portions of the Bible are as much the word of God and as entitled to serious consideration as any other portion, and it gives reason to regard the chronological periods extending to the second coming of Christ as appointed times revealed by God that will likewise be fulfilled.
