The Chief Butler Gives Pharaoh the CupBible World

Genesis 40:21

And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand:

The verse records the fulfillment of Joseph's interpretation of the chief butler's dream, for Pharaoh restored the butler to his former office and position and he again put the cup into Pharaoh's hand and served him. This restoration took place after three days, on the third day, at Pharaoh's birthday feast. On that same occasion the chief baker was hanged, in contrast to the butler's restoration.

After his anxiety was relieved by the cheering interpretation and he saw it exactly fulfilled, the butler in his own prosperity and enjoyment of his restored position forgot Joseph in his affliction and confinement in prison. He forgot him despite the kindness and help he had received, instead of remembering him and speaking in his favor to Pharaoh. His forgetting illustrates ingratitude, which is a serious sin. It is among the most aggravating sins in the Lord's sight, abhorred by God and man, yet of daily occurrence.

The fulfilled interpretation later reminded the butler of Joseph, whom he had forgotten while he was in prison and while enjoying his restored position. He remembered Joseph when Pharaoh was troubled by dreams.
