Joseph Explains Dreams to Two PrisonersBible World

Genesis 40:6

And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad.

Genesis 40:6 takes place while Joseph is still confined in prison, at a turning point in his life. The sad men are Pharaoh's chief butler and chief baker, two officers who had been cast into prison for offending Pharaoh and placed under Joseph's especial care. Joseph himself was there after being unjustly cast into prison for steadfastness to principle in refusing, when tempted, to commit great wickedness and sin against God. Prison humbled him without degrading him, and he continued to live in the fear of God.

Coming to them in the morning, bringing them food, Joseph noticed that they looked very sad. He kindly asked what was troubling them and why they looked so sad that day. His kind question opened the way for them to tell him their dreams for interpretation. Even while suffering injustice in prison, he did not turn inward or dwell only on his own troubles, but forgot them in ministering to the wants of his suffering companions, attending to their distress and showing sympathy and concern for them.
