Pharaoh Dreams of Cows and GrainBible World

Genesis 41:23

And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them:

The verse is the second part of Pharaoh's dream as told to Joseph, showing seven ears — withered, thin, and blasted or scorched or struck by the east wind — springing up after seven full and good ears on one stalk. Those thin ears then devoured the seven good ears. Pharaoh told this dream to the magicians, but none of them could explain it to him.

The thin ears represent seven years of famine in Egypt that would follow seven years of abundance or plenty. The doubling of the dream showed that God had firmly determined this outcome and would bring it to pass soon. Their appearance warned of coming scarcity and the need to prepare for it.
