Pharaoh's Dream Explained as Seven Plenty and Seven Famine Yearsby KyleS
41:25Genesis 41:25
And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do.
Pharaoh's two dreams are one message in which God showed Pharaoh what He was about to do. The seven healthy cows and seven full ears mean seven years of great plenty in Egypt, when field and garden, fruits and grains will yield more abundantly than ever before. The seven thin unsightly cows and seven empty wind-blasted ears mean seven years of severe famine so grievous that the earlier plenty will be forgotten and not remembered. The repetition of the message in two forms proves the outcome is firmly decided and established by God and will take place soon, certain and near. The years of plenty were granted to allow preparation for the severe famine that would follow.
The warning calls for action by setting a discerning, capable, discreet and wise man over Egypt. That preparation was to include appointing officers through the land, collecting the fifth part of the produce during the seven plenteous years, and gathering and storing grain under Pharaoh's control in the cities as a reserve against the famine years. God gave the instruction to the king in a dream seven years before the famine so that large supplies were laid up beforehand for the seven years of famine that were to follow. The provision succeeded wonderfully, so that when famine became severe in Canaan and in all lands, people from all countries journeyed to Egypt to buy corn. Jacob heard of the corn in Egypt and told his sons to go down and buy food so they might live and not die, sending Joseph's ten brothers while keeping Benjamin back lest harm befall him.
