Genesis 41:54
And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
The seven years of dearth began exactly as Joseph had said, fulfilling the seven-year period revealed in Pharaoh's dreams. Joseph's warning and preparations proved accurate, for the time he had foretold arrived on schedule. The dearth was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread because Joseph had prepared and stored food during the seven plentiful years. Egypt had bread while famine affected all lands around it, since food had been stored in advance.
The famine reached Canaan and was severe in the region where Jacob lived. When Egypt itself felt hunger, the people appealed to Pharaoh, Pharaoh directed them to obey Joseph, and Joseph opened the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians. Because of Egypt's abundant grain, people from other countries came to Egypt to buy food, including Jacob's sons who were drawn there to buy.
The verse exemplifies predicted events once only a matter of prophecy that were limited to a definite time and were fulfilled in accordance with the prediction. Such fulfillments show that the chronological portions of the Bible are as much the word of God as any other portion and give confidence that chronological periods extending to the second coming of Christ are appointed times revealed by God. Joseph's provision of bread for people in distress is an example of using available means to relieve suffering.
