Genesis 42:27
And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack’s mouth. And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack’s mouth.
On the homeward journey the brothers stopped at the inn or lodging place for the night, and one of them opened his sack to give his donkey provender and there espied his payment for grain lying at the mouth of the sack. Joseph had given secret orders that every man's silver should be put back into his sack and that provender for the way should also be supplied to them.
The unexpected sight frightened and alarmed them, for they did not know what to make of the returned money and questioned whether it was meant as a token of God's favor or as punishment for their sins. They settled upon guilt, concluding that God had looked upon their past wrongs and was now calling their transgressions to account in order to punish them.
