Genesis 42:30

The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.

The verse belongs to the account the brothers gave to Jacob on returning from their first journey to Egypt to buy food. In it they told how the lord of the land had spoken roughly to them and taken them for spies of the country. They further related that they had replied that they were honest men and had set forth the circumstances of their family.

The harsh speech and charge of spying were a test to discover whether they still possessed the haughty spirit they had formerly shown and to draw out knowledge of their family, for their statements could have been deceptive. To them the ruler's stern dealing gave the impression that he intended evil against them. That report, joined with the money discovered in their sacks, deepened the alarm of the household and their dread of suffering still further loss.
