Genesis 42:32

We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

The words were spoken in defense when the brothers stood accused by Joseph of being spies, insisting that they were true men and not spies. In that defense they declared themselves to be twelve brethren, sons of one father. They further declared that one brother was gone and was no longer with them. They declared that the youngest brother was that day with their father in the land of Canaan. By this answer they gave Joseph information about their family and home.

They afterward repeated this statement to Jacob when they returned to him and related all that had happened to them in Egypt. What they related included that the ruler of Egypt spoke roughly to them, took them for spies, and would not believe their word. They told how he kept one brother bound, sent them away with food for their households, and required them to return with their youngest brother so the bound brother would be released and they could trade in the land. On hearing the report, Jacob feared losing Benjamin in addition to Joseph and Simeon, and refused to send Benjamin with them.
