Genesis 42:5

And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

The famine reached into Canaan and was severely felt in the place where Jacob lived. Because of that need, ten of Jacob's sons journeyed to Egypt to buy grain, coming with the crowds of others who were also seeking food. Joseph afterward directed them to carry grain back to sustain their households, which were suffering under the famine.
