And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.
When Joseph saw Benjamin among them he could scarcely restrain his brotherly love, and he commanded that the men be brought into his house to dine with him. In obedience to that order the steward of his household conducted the brothers into Joseph's residence, where preparations were already underway for the meal they were to share with him.
Being taken into the house alarmed them, for they feared they had been brought there to be accused over the money found in their sacks and to be seized as slaves. They supposed that money had been put back into their sacks on purpose to find occasion against them, and that removing them to the ruler's house would better accomplish that design. To protect themselves they tried to make friends with the steward of the house and explain to him about the money. The steward set their minds at rest, assuring them that their God had given them treasure in their sacks and that he had received their money.
