Genesis 43:21

And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.

These words belong to what the brothers said to Joseph's steward when they were taken into Joseph's house to dine with him. On the journey home they had stopped at the inn and opened their sacks, and there every man's money was in the mouth of his sack. That found money they had brought back to Egypt in their hand, in full weight and full amount, returning it openly.

Along with the returned money they had brought additional other money to buy food. They declared that they did not know who had put the money in their sacks. They spoke because they were afraid they had been brought there to be called to account for the first journey's money.

They feared Joseph would accuse them of wrongdoing and use the money as an occasion purposely laid against them to enslave them. By returning the money they meant to defend themselves and show their innocence and honesty as proof they had acted honestly. They hoped in this way to make friends with the steward and avoid accusation by the ruler who had treated them roughly. Their fear eased when the steward answered that he had received their money and that God had given them treasure.
