Joseph Blesses His Brother Benjaminby emmanuel_higgins

Genesis 43:29

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.

This is Joseph's first meeting with Benjamin, his full brother and Jacob's youngest son. Benjamin had been absent when the other brothers first came to Egypt for food, having stayed with their father as they reported, and Joseph wanted to learn whether their account was true.

The meeting takes place at the home meal after the brothers present their father's gift and bow to the earth before Joseph. Joseph asks about their welfare and whether their aged father is well and still alive, and they answer that he is in good health and alive and bow down again. Joseph then lifts his eyes and sees Benjamin, recognizing him as his own mother's son and as the younger brother of whom they had spoken, and asks to confirm that this is that younger brother. He blesses Benjamin with the words God be gracious unto thee, my son, calling him son. The blessing expresses his special affection and tenderness toward him.

The sight of Benjamin stirs intense brotherly love so that Joseph's heart yearns over his brother and he is deeply moved and overwhelmed. Though he recognizes his own mother's son, he conceals his identity and emotion and must hasten away into his chamber to weep there in private. After weeping, he washes his face and restrains himself, then returns and orders the meal to be served, commanding bread to be set on.
